Ensenada.com: As always, I want to say thanks for taking time to do this interview. In a prior interview with Sergio Susarrey we discussed many of the aspects of the sport fishing business in Ensenada. This time I hope we can take a different approach and talk about a day in a life of a fisherman. To get started, what inspired you to be a fisherman and boat constructor? |
Ensenada.com: Sport fishing as well as tourism in general took a heavy hit in 2008 with all the publicity coming out of Tijuana. Still, people like yourself and Alajandro Pila were able to keep your boats chartered during the summer season. Do you believe the owner operator approach makes a difference?
Ensenada.com: Whether it’s rebuilding an engine, fiberglass or painting, it is said that you knows most everything when it comes to boats. How many boats have you owned and remodeled over the years? Charro: Yes, it's very important for the captain thats there be there because he likes to fish, not just for the paycheck! It's very good to be there personally so the people that are there feel comfortable and assured that if a situation,, (what ever it may be) arose, it's handled personally. I think putting a face to the name gives you better credability as a person, but to your business as well. Charro: I own 3 boats, (1) reconstructed part by part and the other (2) reconstructed completely from paint, to engine, everything top to bottom. I try to learn all these things (factors) as much as possible, by doing so when it comes time to taking on a mission such as rebuilding, reconstructing it's cheaper to do things yourself. Ensenada.com: What was sport fishing in Ensenada like and what changes have you seen? Charro: Before fishing was very good! The ocean was much cleaner, less poluted and not many tuna farms (take away business) and especially less Sea Lions!! Ensenada.com: Live bait has been an issue these past three years. Who have you delta with the problem? Charro: I've had to go and catch it myself on my boats , if that's all you can do ...ooh well! Ensenada.com: What is the most rewarding part of what you do for a living? Charro: That the people who came aboard once leave happy, return soon, and will recommend us for a future charter! And very important too is that my family (kids) see what it takes to learn a honest living and that all good things they can learn from me and the business, they apply this to their lives in the future! |
