Ensenada.com: As always, I want to say thanks for taking time to do this interview. In a prior interview with Sergio Susarrey we discussed many of the aspects of the sport fishing business in Ensenada. This time I hope we can take a different approach and talk about a day in a life of a fisherman. To get started, what inspired you to be a fisherman and boat constructor?
Charro:  When I'd see the fish swimming in the lakes , rivers, it would catch my attention and made me curious of how to catch them ... I liked that feeling! Before everything else I was a rancher, I was born and raised (part of my life) in Sinaloa Mx. since I was very little. Then as I got older I came to Ensenada and I came here with the same curiosity and energy, but this time I wanted to catch bigger and different types of fish, of course all of this would then happen in the big sea!! Being around boats and fishing on them for so long, made me understand the fishmans needs, the absolute MUST of owning your own boat, and with time I grew to understand the needs of the fisherman and began reconstructing boats Custom Made, depending on the needs of each fisherman.
Ensenada.com: What types of fish are your favorites to target during the summer months?
Charro:  Yellowtail, because they are very good and gives a great fight!

Ensenada.com: What is a typical day like from the time you get up until the day’s end. Can you give us some insight of a day in the life of a charter captain/owner?
Charro:  First when I wake up I check on the family, whats on the agendas? Immediatley after I check to see how the ocean is, is it rough out or calm?, find out what fish were caught and where? I then orient myself to go to a better spot (if chartering that day), then I go to the docks to see my boats and check if everything out and finally if the day is favorable, I'll take the family out for a bay ride.

Ensenada.com: Tell us the difference between sport fishing in Ensenada as compared to other popular places and why Ensenada is the place you prefer?
Charro:  The difference is that when people come fish in Ensenada, people want to go on a boat that will catch fish. Unlike other places where you are limited to the times and the amount of fish you catch , and maybe only 1 person will fish! When you come to Ensenada your more liable to catch more and unlimited and variety of marine life too!! Not to mention you will have fun because you were given a good fight!

Ensenada.com: Sport fishing as well as tourism in general took a heavy hit in 2008 with all the publicity coming out of Tijuana. Still, people like yourself and Alajandro Pila were able to keep your boats chartered during the summer season. Do you believe the owner operator approach makes a difference?
Charro:  Yes, it's very important for the captain thats there be there because he likes to fish, not just for the paycheck! It's very good to be there personally so the people that are there feel comfortable and assured that if a situation,, (what ever it may be) arose, it's handled personally. I think putting a face to the name gives you better credability as a person, but to your business as well.

Ensenada.com: Whether it’s rebuilding an engine, fiberglass or painting, it is said that you knows most everything when it comes to boats. How many boats have you owned and remodeled over the years?
Charro:  I own 3 boats, (1) reconstructed part by part and the other (2) reconstructed completely from paint, to engine, everything top to bottom. I try to learn all these things (factors) as much as possible, by doing so when it comes time to taking on a mission such as rebuilding, reconstructing it's cheaper to do things yourself.

Ensenada.com: What was sport fishing in Ensenada like and what changes have you seen?
Charro:  Before fishing was very good! The ocean was much cleaner, less poluted and not many tuna farms (take away business) and especially less Sea Lions!!

Ensenada.com: Live bait has been an issue these past three years. Who have you delta with the problem?
Charro:  I've had to go and catch it myself on my boats , if that's all you can do ...ooh well!

Ensenada.com: What is the most rewarding part of what you do for a living?
Charro:  That the people who came aboard once leave happy, return soon, and will recommend us for a future charter! And very important too is that my family (kids) see what it takes to learn a honest living and that all good things they can learn from me and the business, they apply this to their lives in the future!
